Debuting in 1927, the Rolex Oyster is said to be the first water-resistant watch of all time (no pun intended). Around a decade later, Panerai introduced the Radiomir developed to be worn by Italian Navy divers. These early dive watches were the precursor of the modern dive watch in 1953 when Rolex, Zodiac, and Blancpain introduced the Submariner, Sea Wolf, and Fifty Fathoms.

Designed to function under the tenacious pressure of the ocean and surrounded by boundless amounts of water, the husky, water-resistant cases had rotating dive bezels to measure time underwater and illuminated dials. From then on, dive watches became an important part of scuba kits. Now divers would know the exact time to ascent.

The Luminox company created the Navy Seal Dive Watch at the request of U.S. Navy SEAL teams for use on their night missions. Popular for its unique illumination system, the watch is made of durable, yet inexpensive materials helping to make it affordable. Orient Men's FAA02001B9 Mako II Analog Automatic Hand-Winding Silver Watch

Orient Mako II

I couldn’t end this list of dive watches under $500 without mentioning the Orient Mako II. Of course, there is also the Orient Ray II, which is very similar, but let’s focus on just one model.

Orient is a sub-brand of Seiko, so you know you are getting quality right off the bat. It comes with an automatic movement with 40 hours power reserve.

The style of the watch is very much Submariner, but don’t let that put you off – it is homaged by many for a reason. It is the cleanest, simplest and most effective design.

The Orient Mako II is also very affordable, even though it comes with 200m water resistance, a 120 click uni-directional bezel and an all steel look.
