The Seiko 5 series has some super affordable watches that are also very modern and stylish. And the SNK809 is one of the most famous!
But it’s close brother the SNZG15 is also worth a look if you like the style because they are very very similar.
Before diving into the differences, it is worth comparing the specs to see what, if anything stands out here.

The Main Differences – SNK809 vs SNZG15
Apart from the fact that the SNK series is usually the most affordable, there are also some internal and external differences worth noting.
Movement
First, the SNK809 uses the older 7s26 movement, compared to the 7s36 in the SNZG15. Although, if you check the actual features and specs, the are more or less the same.
Water Resistance
There is a significant difference in water resistance, with the SNK809 being only 30m (splash-proof) while the SNGZ15 is 100m so you should be able to swim with it no problem.
Design – Size & Dial Details
The other main differences are in the dial, with the smaller SNK809 being only 37mm across, while the SNGZ15 is larger at 41mm. The case is only 1mm difference in thickness, but the SNK809 also uses the smaller 18mm strap, while the SNGZ15 uses the 22mm.
They are both field style watches which focus more on functionality than style, but this will suit many of you. The SNK809 has a dominant minute numbering on the outer ring, with the inner ring of numbers showing the hours.
The SNGZ15 has a recessed inner part of the dial with hours on the outer ring, and a 24hr set on the inner ring (so no minute numbering).
The hands are also diamond-shaped on the SNK809, while the SNGZ15 has batons.
They both have a day/date window at 3 o’clock which is not surprising given they are Seiko Series 5 watches. But what is interesting is the placement of the crown, which is at 4 o’clock on the SNK809 (common in many Series 5 dive watches) but 3 o’clock on the SNGZ15.
There are of course other differences you will find in the markers and writing on the dial, but the above are the most noteworthy.
