Magnum P.I. Watches – Jay Hernandez & Tom Selleck

I grew up watching Tom Selleck play Magnum P.I. All that swashbuckling charm and wit, combined with a little detective work was enough to have me glued to the TV.

The original Magnum P.I. series ran from 1980-1988, and Tom Selleck absolutely killed it as the P.I. (private investigator) named Thomas Magnum. His style shone through as he drove his red Ferarri 308 GTS around ever-sunny Hawaii, solving one case after another. And always on his arm was equally stylish Rolex. At least in the later series.

And it is perhaps no surprise that they remade the series in 2018 with a new star, Jay Hernandes. He too wore the same watch as Tom Selleck. A hat tip to the original in more ways than one!

What Watches Did Magnum P.I. Wear?

So, both Jay and Tom wore a Rolex as Magnum P.I. but which watch was it exactly?

Rolex GMT-Master 16750
Rolex GMT-Master ii 16750

Both versions of Magnum P.I. worse a Rolex GMT-Master Pepsi (red and blue) bezel. From what people on the interwebs are saying, it is more than likely a Rolex GMT-Master II Reference: 16750 as well.

It is a watch with 100m water resistance and a handy third hand that you can set to another timezone. Hence the GMT in the name of the watch. It was in fact originally designed by Rolex for Pan Am so that their pilots could wear it while flying internationally. Afterall nothing is worse than landing in a new timezone and having no clue what time it is. But why Magnum PI needed one is anyone’s guess?

In the early episodes of Magnum PI Tom Selleck can also be seen wearing a beefy 42mm Chronosport Sea Quartz 30, which would certainly work well underwater. This was a watch that is very rare and was only made in the early 80s, kinda suiting the 80s theme of Magnum PI to a T.

And it has also been reported that Selleck was seen to sometimes wear a Seiko SQ Quartz diver with a Pepsi bezel as well.

Matthew McConaughey’s Watches (Gold, Interstellar, Lincoln Lawyer & More)

Matthew McConaughey is a  man with charm and charisma and has certainly had his time in the limelight of late. Some of his more famous films include Gold, Interstellar, the Lincoln Lawyer, just to name a few!

A lot of people wonder what watch Matthew McConaughey wore in each of those movies. So, in this post, I am going to dive in deep and show you which watch Matthew McConaughey wore.

Which watch did Matthew McConaughey wear in Gold?

Matthew McConaughey watch movie gold

Matthew McConaughey plays Kenny Wells in the 2016 movie – Gold. The real-life story of a gold prospector who goes from almost broke to riches, in a wild ride you will definitely enjoy.

While starring in Gold, Matthew McConaughey wears a simple gold Casio – model A159WGEA-5 in the early scenes of the movie during his time in New York. Another silver/gold watch can be briefly spotted on his wrist later in the movie – my guess is it’s a Rolex.

Casio A159WGEA-5

The Casio A159WGEA-5 is a classic gold retro Casio that is very hard to come by today. If you are looking for something similar, this Casio model is almost identical.

Which watch did Matthew McConaughey wear in Interstellar?

In the 2014 movie Interstellar, Matthew McConaughey plays a father who is torn away from his family to help save humankind.

While starring in this mind-bending thriller, Matthew McConaughey wears the Hamilton Khaki Pilot Day Date (Ref: H64615135). It features a wide day window at 12 o’clock, something that has classically been seen on the Rolex Day-Date.

Which watch did Matthew McConaughey wear in Lincoln Lawyer?Matthew McConaughey watch lincoln lawyer

In the Lincoln Lawyer, a 2011 legal thriller,  Matthew McConaughey plays a lawyer representing the son of a wealthy real estate mogul. He works out of his Lincoln car, hence the name of the movie.

During his performance in the Lincoln Lawyer, Matthew McConaughey wears a Tag Heuer Grand Carrera. A watch befitting a lawyer, with a clean white dial and an alligator leather strap.

From closer examination, I believe the model is the Tag Heuer Grand Carrera Calibre 8 RS Grande-Date GMT (Reference: WAV5112.FC6225).

During the film, Matthew McConaughey wears a Rip Curl Ultimate Oceansearch watch, a model that is definitely not something you see very often. This Rip Curl Oceansearch comes with all the features Matthew could possibly need as a treasure hunter on the open water – Dual Time, Light, Countdown Timer, Stop watch, Digital Compass & Alarm. George Clooney’s Watch Worn In The American

The American is an action thriller from 2010 starring George Clooney. In this case, Clooney is not as charismatic as he is in perhaps Ocean’s Eleven, but the film is gripping nonetheless.

George Clooney plays Jack, a contract killer, or assassin if you will, who is also a gunsmith known for his stunning craftsmanship. He has been given a job to create one such stunning, but deadly creation for Mathilde, a female assassin he meets frequently in the movie.

What Watch Does Clooney Wear in The American?

During the American, George Clooney is seen wearing an Omega Speedmaster Professional. Nothing less than a classic Omega for a killer holed up in a picturesque Italian village, right?

This particular model is an Omega Speedmaster with a chronograph and tachymeter around the bezel, and a black leather strap. In all likelihood, it could be the Omega model 3870.50.31.

oldest watch brands

Oldest Watch Brands Of All Time

Time. It’s complicated yet simple, elusive yet apparent, imminent yet distant. It’s been the theme of songs, poems, and proverbs since, well, the beginning of time. That’s what makes horology, the study of timekeeping, a fascinating discipline.

Mankind first began marking time with a stick in the ground to note its shadow as the spin of the earth on its axis caused the sun to move from horizon to horizon. This led to the invention of the sundial, and as the very time being measured marched on,  timekeeping instruments like water clocks, candle clocks, and hourglasses evolved.

After pendulum clocks were developed in the 17th century, timekeeping advanced to become more accurate. That same century, the invention of the mainspring made portable timepieces possible. They were time-consuming and expensive to make. Only royalty and the wealthy would wear pendant watches and pocket watches.

Wristwatches became popularized post-WWI after the military wore them to synchronize missions. Mass production methods made them easier to make and cheaper to buy. Watch manufacturing thrived, and today, some of the oldest watch brands still exist. Here, in no particular order, are a few favorites. Some are household names around the world, others aren’t as well known.

Jaquet Droz, 1738

As a young man, Pierre Jaquet Droz created automata, a mechanical art form that integrated music and motion. Europe and China’s elite adored him. He began manufacturing watches in 1738 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. Pierre based his work on Haute watchmaking focusing on aesthetics and style over mechanics. Unfortunately, the Napoleonic Wars at the turn of the 18th century ended his prosperity. It wasn’t until the year 2000 that the brand resurfaced after the Swatch Group acquired it. Exciting new timepieces were launched reviving the company’s name. You can see the consistency of the brand’s design ideals in the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde SW models. These models use exquisite materials like 18K rose or gray gold and blued steel hands.

blancpain 5008e

Blancpain, 1735

The Blancpain brand has the distinction of being the world’s oldest registered watchmaking brand. In 1735, Jehan-Jaques Blancpain opened a workshop on the top floor of his home in Villeret, Switzerland. The company became successful based on producing a limited number of watches each year.

At one point in time, Blancpain was the official supplier for the French navy at their request. They needed a tough and dependable dive watch. This helped the horologists sharpen their skills in crafting dive watches. The Fifty Fathoms, launched in 1953 is one of the brand’s most iconic models.

The brand had its fair share of financial ups and downs over the years, but would never lose the title of being the world’s first watchmaking company. Blancpain was reestablished in 1983 and is now owned by current watch giant Swatch.

Rolex watch

Rolex, 1905

Founded in London in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex is nowhere near the oldest watch brand, but it’s old enough and famous enough to be mentioned here. The company relocated to Geneva, Switzerland in 1919 and went on to become a classic Swiss brand despite its British roots.

By 2012 the company had 2,800 employees and a sales record of more than $7 billion dollars. It gained fame on the Silver Screen by starring in the arms of actors like Sean Connery, Steve McQueen, and Michael Caine. So, while it’s not the oldest, Rolex is the most recognizable luxury watch brand, famous for its iconic crown logo and watch models like the Oyster Perpetual and the Rolex Submarine. Most models come with price tags in the thousands or hundreds of thousands like the Cosmograph Daytona Chronograph Rainbow Diamond Watch.

Vacheron Constantin, 1755

Most of the world’s oldest and distinguished watch brands are based in Switzerland and Vacheron Constantin is no exception. Founded in Geneva in 1755, the brand is the oldest to survive with no interruption in production. It all began when master watchmaker Jean-Marc Vacheron opened his modest business. Over two centuries later, the company continues to produce world-class, top-quality luxury timepieces with a hefty price tag. Its 57260 Reference model currently carries the title of “most complex watch ever made.” It has 57 complications and 2,800 decorative elements. Functions include multiple calendars and a double retrograde split-seconds chronograph. Decorative features are a white gold case, beveling, circular graining, and Côtes de Genève decor.

Ferdinand Berthoud, 1753

Watchcrafting and science are closely related disciplines as proven by Ferdinand Berthoud in 18th century Paris. Berthoud had worked for the French navy and was a collaborating inventor for the marine chronograph, an instrument that could pinpoint the east-west position of a ship at sea.

The brand stayed in the family for over a century, but the death of heir Charles-Auguste Berthoud caused the company’s demise. But alas, the brand was reborn with the launching of a new watch, the Ferdinand Berthoud FB 1.3 Chronometer to pay tribute to the founder. Today, expect Ferdinand Berthould’s timepieces to offer the best diving watches.

Favre-Leuba, 1737

Founded in 1737, Favre-Leuba is an old established watch brand but not as well known as some of the oldest watch brands. The founder, Abraham Favre was a registered watchmaker in Le Locle, Switzerland where he began his business. His sons, and eventually his grandsons inherited the family business and kept it going. In 1815, Auguste Leuba brought his expertise as a merchant and watchmaker to the company and the brand name was changed to Favre-Leuba. The family sold the business in the 1980s during the quartz crisis in Swiss watch manufacturing, but it was revived in 2011. Expect watches that have barometers and altimeters for outdoor adventures from the Favre-Leuba company today.

longines hydro conquest dial & case

Longines, 1832

Longines is a popular Swiss watch brand that dates back to 1832. Auguste Agassiz founded the company in 1832 where the headquarters are to this day. It’s now a part of the Swatch Group with timepieces available worldwide. Longines watches are considered to be affordable alternatives to Rolex. The company has and continues to keep an archive of the serial numbers of all models of its timepieces that have ever been manufactured. Therefore, the company can provide a Certificate of Authenticity for each purchase. All Longines watches are made in Switzerland and must pass the strictest Swiss quality assurance process.

Tissot, 1853

Tissot was founded by the father and son team Charles-Felicien and Charles-Emile Tissot in Cret-Vaillant, Le Locle, Switzerland in 1853. It’s another longstanding Swiss watch brand that offers more affordable luxury watches such as the timepieces in Tissot’s Classic collection. The brand has been highly successful in its knowledge to craft manual and automatic watches. One of the brand’s most beloved collections is the T-collection with enhanced functionality and reliability launched back in the 1990s.

Tissot prides itself on its involvement with Alpine tourism through ventures like partnering with the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), the Jungfrau railways, and the First Cliff Walk in Grindelwald. Tissot was also present for the Glacier 3000 where the
brand’s name is now attached to the first suspension bridge in the world that links two summits, the Peak Walk by Tissot.

TAG Heuer, 1860

TAG Heuer timepieces have so much modern appeal on the market, it’s hard to believe the brand has been around since 1860. Initially known as the Heuer Watch Company, it was founded by Edouard Heuer in St. Imier, Switzerland. Although the company held its own, it was during the 1920s when the brand hit a new level of success after landing a deal with the Olympics as the official timekeeper of the famous sporting event. Another success story for Tag Heuer was its Mikrograph timepiece. At that time, it was recognized as the most accurate on the public market with its VPH rating.

seiko prospex ssc017 dial

Seiko, 1881

Seiko is one of those old established brands that have become a household name around the world. It was founded by 22-year-old Kintaro Hattori in 1881. At first, Seiko was a watch repair shop in Ginza, Tokyo. The brand later opened a factory to manufacture its own watches in Seikosha around 1892. The brand was the first to develop a wristwatch for the Japanese market, a distinction that earned it a place in the history books. Seiko continues to supply the market with timepieces featuring the latest in watch technology.

Hamilton, 1892

Hamilton is an American brand founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania by Abram Bitner. The company later transferred its headquarters to Switzerland, a nation known for its excellence in watch crafting. The result was a style that blends Swiss elegance with American ruggedness. This heritage attracts both casual watch wearers and serious collectors. Now affiliated with the Swatch Group, Hamilton timepieces are abundant and popular in the top-mid price range.

Omega, 1848

Founded by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Omega is one of Switzerland’s most stylish luxury watch brands if not the world. It’s also one of the oldest still in operation. A member of the prestigious Swatch Group, Omega’s headquarters is currently in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland. Expect quality timepieces on the level of Rolex and TAG Heuer. The brand also has the distinction of being the official timepiece of the James Bond 007 movie franchise, also named Omega.

best watch replica websites

Best Replica Watch Sites: Approved By The Community

Luxury watches are some of the most exclusive pieces of jewelry in the world. They are absolutely gorgeous with a flawless mechanism inside, and they’re so expensive it hurts.

High-end and luxury watches from brands like Rolex, Richard Mille, and Patek Philippe usually cost tens of thousands of dollars, with the most unique options selling for millions. If you admire the design but can’t afford to spend the price of a new car on a wristwatch, a good replica is the next best thing.

And the best place to find a great replica is a trusted replica watch site, which is exactly what I’ll be talking about in this guide. I’ve listed the top trusted sites as rated by forums like RepGeek and RWG, so you can be certain they’re all perfectly safe!

What To Look For

Before I tell you about the best and most trusted replica watch sites, I want to tell you about the specific things you should look for in a good seller. So, when you stumble upon a site that’s not on this list, you’ll be able to tell whether or not they’re to be trusted in just a couple of minutes.

Payment Methods

Payment Methods

Perhaps the easiest way to tell whether you should trust a watch site is by checking what type of payments they offer. In my experience, if you see PayPal as an option, the site is legit. But if you only see direct bank transfers or Western Union, be very careful.

What that means is that the site usually doesn’t have a refund policy – if you never receive your watch due to a shipping issue or if you end up not liking it, you won’t ever get your money back. With PayPal and card payments, you can always contact the bank or PayPal directly to take your payment back. But with direct transfers, once you send that money you’re never seeing it again.

Materials

Great replicas aren’t just about getting the details to look exactly the same. They’re about quality, and that’s exactly why the top trusted replica sites are far from cheap. A good replica of a Rolex can cost more than a thousand dollars and that’s because it’s made from premium materials. The best replicas are the ones that have high-quality movement inside, sapphire crystal glass on the dial and great power reserve.

You’ll see top tier stainless steel, high end buckles, great water resistance and smooth rotating bezels. The watch should look and feel like the real deal, at least to people who aren’t experts at noticing the differences.

If you see acrylic and quartz movement on a Rolex replica, it’s not a good replica and it’s best to stay away.

Quality Control Photos

Quality Control Photos

If you see that a website will send you quality control photos after you place your order, it’s usually a great sign. And it’s even better if their product listings have 20+ watermarked QC photos since it usually means they’re a legit business.

In case a site offers only photos of the original watch and not of their replicas, it’s best to stay away from them since they’re likely a scam.

Warranty

Sites that are serious about their replicas don’t have an issue backing up their product with some sort of warranty. It’s not as extensive as the warranty real brands offer, but even something like 3-6 months is better there nothing.

If a site offers no warranty and doesn’t have a refund policy in place, it’s better to stay away unless you’re 100% sure that you’ll be happy with their watch.

One thing to keep in mind is that most sites don’t extend their warranties to water damage because there’s no way for you to verify that you didn’t submerge the watch deeper than suggested. Keep in mind that the water resistance is rarely stated correctly on the dial, and you should instead check the description box before you go underwater with the watch.

Check What Others Are Saying

It only takes a couple of seconds to type ‘xy website reviews and experiences’, and it’s the easiest way to tell whether something is legit or a scam. Check what people are saying on the dozens of watch forums, and even Reddit can be a great source of information here. If you can’t find anything for a specific website, it’s likely better not to trust them with your money.

And if you want to be sure, you can always post in the forums or subreddits to ask other if they’ve had any experience with the site in question.

Puretimewatch.io

Puretime

Puretimewatch is one of the most trusted sites in the business. The watches on their site are not exactly cheap, but they are really good replicas of high-end brands like Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Patek Philippe, etc.

You’ll find that most of the replicas sold on this site are made with premium materials like sapphire crystal and 316L stainless steel, as well as that lots of them, have high-quality movement inside – hence the high price point.

Puretimewatch accepts credit card payments, Bitcoin transfers as well as direct bank transfers. They ship packages via EMS, DHL, UPS, and whenever possible they’ll ship with EMS and declare a lower value on the package, so you don’t have to pay import fees.

This replica watch site offers a six month warranty on all their products, and that covers any manufacturing defects or shipping damages. However, they don’t offer any refunds, so you should be 100% certain that you’re buying exactly what you want.

Jtime.cc

Jtime

Jtime is another excellent watch replica site you can trust with your money. They sell really good replicas made from high-quality materials and unless you’re a professional watchmaker, it will be really hard to tell the difference between a Jtime watch and the real deal. The site offers a six-month warranty for all of their watches, and that covers any manufacturing defects or problems that happen with normal use.

This site offers several ways of payment including credit cards, bank, and Western Union transfers, Bitcoin, and even cash on delivery. You get a discount for paying with Bitcoin or bank/WU transfer, and there’s a 5% extra fee if you choose cash on delivery. But this is probably the best and safest method of payment because you get the opportunity to inspect the package and refuse it if it’s not to your liking.

Also, Jtime accepts returns, but only if you did not receive the exact product you ordered. If that happens you are also eligible for a refund, but only if you return the watch and pay for shipping.

Mirotime.net

Mirotime

Mirotime is another trusted watch replica site, but they don’t have a huge variety like the two other sites I’ve mentioned. Their product range is much more limited, so if you’re looking for a rare watch or something very specific, it’s unlikely you’ll find it here.

But if you want a budget replica, they’re a great pick. A Patek Philippe copy for less than $200? Yes, please!

The downside of this site is that I can’t find any info on warranty or refunds except for the fact that they offer none for water-damaged watches. But they apparently have excellent customer service that often interacts with people on Reddit and other forums, so at least it will be easy to get in touch with them if you have any qualms about ordering from the site.

Also, the payments they offer include bank transfer, Western Union, Bitcoin and PayPal! You can’t pay directly with your card, but PayPal is much more secure anyway, so that’s great!

Perfectclones

Pfclones

Another site I have to mention here is Perfectclones. They sell really good replicas of luxury watches and for reasonable prices. What actually impressed me the most about this site is that their Submariner replica is so good that even its power reserve is exactly what it is on the original what – a whooping 72 hours. That’s really hard to pull off, and even established manufacturers that sell their watches for hundreds and thousands of dollars can’t achieve that.

The water-resistance of their watches is terrible, however, but that’s the one and only downside. They use premium materials, screw-down crowns, and high-quality movement.

Also, all of the watches from this site are covered with a 3-month warranty that extends to any manufacturing defects and shipping damages. Pfclones only accepts returns in very specific situations and the same goes for refunds.

They offer a variety of payment methods including direct transfer, credit cards payments processed through PayPal, Bitcoin, Ethereum and also Moneygram, Alipay and WeChatPay.

GeekTime.cc

GeekTime

GeekTime is a very popular watch replica site run by a guy named Eric. It’s not a standard add-to-cart and pay online type of site, but you can trust this man with your money 100%. Eric personally does quality control for every item he ships, and you will receive very detailed photos of the watch before he ships it to you.

Eric is very hands-on with his customers, and he’s provided his email and WhatsApp number for people to contact him before ordering. Sometimes he won’t have the exact replica watch you’re interested in, but if you don’t mind waiting you will eventually get your hands on it.

Payment options are limited and Eric requires a small down payment after you’ve placed your order. He accepts bank and Western Union transfers from most countries, and in some cases, it’s also possible to pay with PayPal Friends and Family method. But as I already said – this site is run by a man that always interacts with his customers to make sure they’re getting what they want, and he is highly praised in the community.

By the way, make sure you go to geektime.cc to shop from Eric. There’s also geek-time.co, but I was not able to find out who runs that site and if it’s related to Eric’s site, so I really can’t vouch for them.

Intime05.co

Intime

Intime05 is another trusted watch replica site praised by forums in the know. They do replicas of all the exclusive brands like Richard Mille, Patek Philip, Tag Heuer, etc., and they offer a lot of quality control photos for each of their watches. Their replicas are very detailed and well made, with premium materials like titanium, sapphire crystal, and high-end stainless steel.

Also, they use quality movement in their luxury replicas, which is the reason for the high prices. Intime05 offers a 1-year warranty on their watches, which covers all manufacturing defects and issues that occur with normal use. It doesn’t extend to water damage though, but that’s expected.

They don’t offer refunds or returns if you don’t like the watch, so keep that in mind. Their policy states that you have 48 hours from the moment you receive the package to let them know if there is anything wrong with your watch. If they don’t hear from you in the first 48 hours they assume you’re happy with the product.

This site accepts credit card payments (Visa, Master and JCB) and cryptocurrency (bitcoin and Litecoin) with a 6% discount. After your payment goes through, you will get quality control images to confirm that the watch is everything you want it to be.

Ts-stations.cn

Ts-stations

Ts-stations is a great resource of luxury replica watches. Rolex, Omega, Montblanc, and Breguet are just some of the famous brands on their site, and they have hundreds of different watch models for you to choose from. Their website isn’t exactly great, but you can trust these people with your money and that’s the important thing.

Replica watches sold on this site are made from premium materials, and in some cases, you can even choose which movement you prefer. That impacts the price, so if you find a watch a bit too expensive for your budget, you can always just go with a cheaper movement.

Ts-stations offers a 1-year warranty on all of their watches, which covers any manufacturing defects and shipping damages. They also give you 48 hours from the moment you receive the watch to let them know if there’s anything wrong with it, so you can immediately start working on the return/refund process.

As for payment options, they accept credit cards, Western Union, direct bank transfer and Bitcoin. They also offer tracked express shipping with DHL, FedEx and UPS, and that’s a great option if you want to receive your watch as fast as possible and not wait for standard postal service. But it’s also very expensive, in addition to the high watch prices.

Fatpanda

Fatpanda

Fatpanda is a popular site with members of the replica watch community, but it’s not very friendly to newbies. For one, the site layout is far from convenient – they have a gallery with more than 18000 photos across dozens of different brands. You can browse the gallery and once you see something you like, you’re supposed to contact the admins to get a price quote.

Long-standing members of the community can pay with PayPal, but first-time buyers are only eligible for bank transfers, Western Union, Paysend, and Transferwise. They ship from China with EMS Express and EMS economy, which means that it will take a while for your watch to arrive. Also, the site offers triangle shipping to EU and USA customers, but that takes even longer.

They don’t mention refunds or returns anywhere on their site, so it’s safe to assume that once you’ve sent your money, you’ll never see it again. But that’s fine if you’re 100% certain about the watch you are buying because Fatpanda offers top-notch replicas. Their replicas are practically indistinguishable from the originals, and they’re all made with top-tier materials.

Also, this site doesn’t do just watch replicas. They also do bags, belts, wallets and other items from luxury brands, so they’re not a bad option if you want some high end accessories for very little money.

Theonewatches.ru

Theonewatches

Theonewatches is a site that’s been around for more than a decade, so you know they’re to be trusted. They’re quite popular with the watch replica community because of the excellent quality of their products and the amount of QC photos they post. You can see for yourself just how detailed their photos are. Also, this is one of the few sites that will actually tell you exactly which parts differ from the original watch.

This site offers credit card payments as well as Bitcoin, bank transfers, and Western Union, which is pretty good. They ship with DHL whenever possible, meaning your watch will arrive quickly! And once it arrives, you have seven days to return the package if you’re not happy with the quality. The site offers full refunds without any additional fees, and that’s certainly impressive.

They sell replicas of quite a lot of brands from Swarowski to Piaget, and they’re one of the best sites in the business when it comes to variety. Also, they include all the information you might need on the replica, a lot of original photos, and whenever possible, they’ll even link a video of their replica so you can see it from all angles!

Note About Bottom Tier Sellers

If you’re on a very tight budget and just want the cheapest replica available, you will find lots of options on sites like Aliexpress, Alibaba, Dhgate, etc. Watches here retail for anywhere from $2 to hundreds of dollars, and the copies with higher prices will have somewhat better quality. However, watches on these sites are generally bottom-tier quality with disappointing specs, and you’re almost always better off just buying something from Casio or Timex.

watch band size

Watch Band Sizes (Width & Length): Find The Perfect Fit

If you’re shopping for a new watch online, there are a few things you should look for to ensure you’re getting something that’s not just gorgeous, but also fits your wrist perfectly. It’s important to make sure the case is the right size for your wrist, but there’s something even more important than that – the correct width and length of the watchband.

If you get a watch with a band that’s too long for you and you’ll wind up wearing it around your elbow. But if you get one that’s too short, it’s even worse since you can’t possibly make it longer.

So, how do you determine what width and length of a watch band are perfect for you? Read on to find out!

Length Vs. Width Of Watch Bands

Watch Band

What’s more important – the width or length or a watch band?

I would say the length, definitely. The width of a watch bracelet depends on the size of the case. It’s designed to fit the case well and you’ll always see wider bands on bigger cases and smaller bands on smaller cases.

But the length differs from watch to watch, and most manufacturers will offer the same exact watch with several lengths of the band. That’s because all of us have wrists of different sizes and what might be the perfect fit for me could be way too small for you.

When shopping for a brand new watch online, it’s crucial that you make sure you’re getting a good bracelet length. Always go for the perfect fit if it’s available, just make sure that you’ve measured your wrist correctly and that you know what’s the right band length for you.

Watch Good Fit

If you can’t find a length that’s perfect for your wrist, always go for the longer option. You can easily adjust the length of virtually any watch band out there, and it’s better to get something big and adjust it than to get something that’s too small and you can’t even get it around your wrist.

Also, if you really like a particular watch case but you hate the bracelet, keep in mind that you can always replace those. It’s really not hard to take off the bracelet on your own, and you can get someone to do it at any watch store. Just make sure to have a bracelet that you already like and that fits well before you take the watch into a store.

How To Measure Your Wrist?

Sewing Tape

The quickest and easiest way to measure your wrist is to take sewing tape and just wrap it around your wrist. This is the fastest way to determine the length of the band that’s perfect for you. One important thing to note here is that you should measure either above or the knuckle, depending on how you prefer to wear the watch.

No sewing tape at home? That’s fine, there are ways around that. You can take a piece of Sellotape/scotch-tape and just wrap that around your wrist. When you’ve cut out the perfect fit, take it off and measure it with a ruler or basic measuring tape. And if you don’t have scotch tape at home, just take a piece of paper and cut it out to a length that comfortably wraps around your wrist.

I would also advise that you don’t wrap anything too tightly around your wrist. Leave a bit of wiggle room, so that the watch doesn’t feel too tight on your wrist. And if you’re looking at a watch that doesn’t have the perfect band length for you, always go with the longer option. It’s better for it to be a bit loose, than to wear a watch that just cuts of the blood flow to your hand.

Importance Of Case Size

Different Watches

Watch cases come in many different shapes and sizes. Cases of women’s watches tend to be smaller since women generally have smaller wrists, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the bands are narrower or shorter. That’s because the width of a watch band is not determined just by the size of the case, but rather the width of lugs.

Lugs are those two tiny ‘horns’ that stick our on either side of the watch case and which secure the band to it. Their inner width is what determines how wide the band is, so if you can’t find info on the exact width of a watch bracelet, try to find info on the lug-to-lug width instead. However, keep in mind that a lot of manufacturers list the outer width.

Watch Steel Bracelet

Obviously, larger cases have wider bands while smaller cases tend to feature narrower bands. But the length usually stays the same. The standard length for women’s watch straps are 165-180mm, where for men’s watches it’s 184-197mm.

The average width of a watch band depends on exactly how big the case is. With smaller, 36mm cases the band is usually around 18mm, but it’s as wide as 22mm on larger 44mm cases.

Also, you should always pay attention to the size of the watch case, and not necessarily because of the bandwidth. Just measure the width of the case against your wrist so you can have a general idea of how it will fit and look on your arm. 50mm+ cases are definitely not for everyone, and certainly not for people with dainty wrists.

Importance Of Materials And Clasps

Watch Buckle

It’s certainly convenient to know the circumference of your wrist, but it’s not always necessary when shopping for watches. Especially for watches with silicone, leather, or nylon bands that have buckle closure. These bands usually feature multiple holes, so you secure the buckle to different positions. This means that a single band is designed to fit a wide variety of wrist circumferences equally well.

But if we’re talking about stainless steel bracelets or push-button deployment clasps, then it’s essential to know exactly which length is best for you. Quality watch manufacturers always offer multiple band lengths, allowing you to really get as close as possible to the perfect fit.

Stainless Steel Watch

If there are no options for bracelet length, you will need to get the watch adjusted. You can take it to a watch repair store or you can do it yourself – it’s actually really easy to do if you have a steady hand, and all you need is a watch band tool kit. You can get one for approximately $10-20, and learning this useful skill can save you a lot of money on future adjustments.

It’s important to note that it won’t always be possible for you to manually adjust the bracelet length. Some brands don’t make it easy to do this on your own, and if you pick up a very specific watch you will need to get it resized at an authorized store.

sustainable eco-friendly watch brands

Top Eco-Friendly And Sustainable Watch Brands

How you spend your money is entirely your business, but it’s always great to support brands that are attempting to make a difference. That’s why it’s smart to know exactly who and what you are supporting with your hard-earned money, even when you’re shopping for something as simple as a wrist watch.

In this post we’ll talk about watch brands that are eco-friendly and sustainable. Some of them pull plastic directly from the ocean for every watch they sell and others plant trees for every package they ship. And we’ll cover other things like using recycled materials, monitoring the supply chain and treatment of factory workers.

Read on to see the top eco-friendly and sustainable watch brands that are trying to make a difference and minimize their impact on the environment!

Sustainable Practices To Look For

Sustainable

I’m not going to list all the eco-friendly brands below, so how can you recognize the others?

It’s pretty simple really – just look for sustainable practices. The most important thing to look for is what material a brand uses for their watches. Luxury watch brands – which are far from sustainable – use only the best materials like luxurious leather and sapphire crystal glass, and they’re miles away from being eco-friendly.

You should look for vegan watches that don’t feature genuine leather but faux leather instead. Also, if a brand is using plastic in their watches (nylon bands or acrylic on the dial), check if they are using recycled plastic. It’s also possible to recycle stainless steel, and if a brand uses recycled stainless steel or other metals in their watch cases, that’s a huge plus.

Wooden Watch

Some brands even make watches from wood, which is definitely something you should be considering if you’re on the prowl for an eco-friendly watch. Not only are these completely sustainable, but they’re also really unique and perfect for people who want to stand out.

Another thing to consider is whether a brand is doing anything to minimize their carbon footprint. Watch manufacturers are caught up with the rest of the fashion industry and most of them are trying to do their part to minimize their impact on the environment. Even Rolex have upgraded their facilities near Geneva to include rooftop gardens with rainwater collectors, in an attempt to minimize their impact on the environment. This is really easy to check, and if a brand is doing something they are proud of, you can usually find it in their ‘about us’ page.

Recycling

Something else you should consider is the labor practices of a brand. If their factories are overseas, they need to be SA8000 certified, otherwise it’s a big red flag. It’s one thing to manufacture where labor costs are lower, it’s a completely different to thing to exploit children and disregard the Geneva convention.

Last but not least, don’t forget to check out the packaging. It should include just the essentials, and best case scenario, everything that you get in the box should be recyclable – apart from the watch, obviously.

Mondaine

Mondaine Essence

MondaineSingle Hand Watches (Unique Timepieces) is one of the most famous Swiss manufacturers out there. They actually have the license to use the design of the Swiss Railway Clock for their dial, which is what makes them stand out among other great manufacturers from Switzerland.

But what’s even more important is that Mondaine is really doing everything in their power to make their watches eco-friendly. They have launched an entire collection of sustainable watches, which are predominantly made from natural and recycled materials. The Essence collection features the latest watch technology with 70% of the parts that are built from reusable materials.

They’ve also expanded this collection since the initial launch to include watches with easily replaceable straps. And of course, they offer vegan and eco-friendly straps that are made from things like recycled PET bottles and cork lining.

Citizen

Citizen Eco Drive

Citizen is another big name in the watch industry that is doing its part to increase the brand’s sustainability. They launched the Eco-Drive collection more than four decades ago, when the oil crisis made it clear that there is a growing need for more sustainable materials and clean energy sources.

They launched their first light-powered watch back in 1976, which is certainly impressive. Nowadays, their Eco-Drive collection has more watches than you can count, including everything from diving watches to elegant dress watches. They’re all solar powered and require no batteries, so as long as they see the light of the day, they will keep ticking.

Citizen also uses vegan leather in some of their watches, but not all. Their luxury watches still include genuine leather and all the premium materials, but that’s what people expect for the money. You can get an eco-friendly vegan watch from this brand if you want, and I think that it’s important you know that. Especially since they had such a big impact on the industry more than 40 years ago.

Nordgreen

Nordgreen Watch

Nordgreen was always going to be a sustainable brand since they went ahead and put ‘green’ in the brand’s name. Sustainability has been one of their top priorities and they’re proud to tell you about all their eco-friendly accomplishments so far.

The brand is carbon neutral, which isn’t something a lot of brands can say about themselves. They’ve planted thousands of trees to offset the emissions of their Copenhagen offices, and they continue to do so in order to offset the impact of every single package they ship. And by the way, all of their packaging is minimal, recyclable and made from recycled materials.

There’s a couple other things you need to know about this brand. They sell refurbished watches, which means that very few of their watches actually get thrown out. Also, this brand is all about giving back to the community, and when you buy a watch from them, a percentage of the proceeds goes to one of their three favorite causes – providing education or clean water to children in need or protecting the rainforests.

You can read more about the various NGO’s they’ve partnered with throughout the years and all the ways in which they are giving back to the community on their site. But if you want to be a part of their story, all you have to do is get yourself a stylish Nordgreen watch.

TRIWA

TRIWA Watch

TRIWA is another brand that let us know from the start that they were going to do things differently. Their name stands for ‘Transforming the Industry of Watches’, which is a pretty big statement. So, can their actions back up that claim?

Yes! This brand has an entire collection of watches that are made from plastic pulled out of the oceans. To be more precise, the strap and case are made from recycled ocean plastic, and the other materials are more standard for watches. The case back is stainless steel and the glass used to protect the dial is tough and durable mineral crystal.

TRIWA also has a collection of watches that is made from humanium metal. That is metal gotten from the destruction of illegal firearms, so this particular collection of watches might be more important than the previous one. Also, 15% of profits from every Humaniun metal watch sold goes to IM Sweden, which is an organization working to achieve a world free from exclusion and poverty.

Woodwatch

Woodwatch Watch

Woodwatch is exactly what it sounds like – a company that manufactures wooden watches. Different types of wood are used for creating the cases and bracelets of their watches, so every single wristwatch from Woodwatch is unique in its own way.

The brand also plants three trees for every watch they sell, which allows them to compensate for their wood consumption and minimize their carbon footprint. They do the same for every package they send out, which puts them at the top of the list of eco-friendly brands.

There’s a lot of variety within their offer, including everything from simple dress watches to chronographs and automatic watches. But keep in mind that they don’t do diving watches since wood isn’t the right material for that.

TIVC

TIVC Watch

TIVC is another brand that was founded with the intent to make a difference. Their name stands for Time IV (for) Change, and their mission has been to create gorgeous vegan watches from the start.

All of their leather bands are vegan and cruelty-free, meaning that no animals were harmed in the process of making TIVC watches. The leather they use is made from recycled materials, and it feels just as good as genuine leather. Maybe even better since you know it’s 100% cruelty-free and better for the environment.

Also, the brands use recycled aluminum and stainless steel for their watches, so more than 50% of every single watch they make is made from recycled and sustainable materials. To top it all off, their Hong Kong factory is SA8000 certified, so you can be entirely certain that when you buy a TIVC watch you are supporting a company that is truly doing its best to create positive change.

Solios

Solios Watch

One way of increasing the sustainability of a brand is eliminating the need for batteries entirely. That’s exactly what Solios does, by manufacturing only solar-powered watches. And that is just scratching the surface of their sustainable effort.

Solios also uses cruelty-free Eco Leather bands that are free of PVC, PU as well as toxic waste. But not all of their watches come with sustainable vegan leather bands – some feature mesh stainless steel bracelets, which stand out with the colorization process. While most other brands opt to color the metal in the cheapest way possible, Solios instead uses ionic colorization. It’s a lot more expensive but creates zero chemical waste.

If you decide to get a Solios watch, expect it to arrive in 100% recycled and recyclable cardboard. The brand is dedicated to minimizing waste and environmental impact in every way possible and they manage to do that with the most wasteful part of any watch – its box.

Baume

Baume Ocean Watch

Luxury brands often get a pass when it comes to eco-friendly practices, but I’m happy to say that times are changing. Baume & Mercier is one of the luxury brands that is trying their best to make their practices more sustainable, starting with ethical business practices and minimal carbon emissions.

They still use some luxury materials, but they guarantee that everything is ethically sourced. Baume won’t sell you a watch with leather from an exotic animal, but they will sell you a watch with a band made from trout skin. They still use diamonds in some of their watches, but they originate only from countries that apply the Kimberly Process. This means that none of those are ‘blood diamonds’, and you can be certain that they are completely ethical.

On top of that, Baume has a limited edition collection of watches that are made from recycled plastic from oceans. You get an RPET bracelet lined with cork as well as a case that is 80% recycled plastic and 20% glass fibers that increase its durability.

Baume might not be as sustainable as brands that are fully committed to Vegan watches and natural materials, but they do so much more than other luxury brands that they definitely deserved to be mentioned. And if you’re in the market for a luxury watch, you might as well give your money to the company that’s at least doing something to make a difference.

SOLGAARD

Solgaard Watch

SOLGAARD is one of my favorite brands on this list for two reasons. One is that their watches are exactly my style and the other is that they pull 5lbs of plastic from the ocean for every single item they sell. Let me say that again – for every item you buy from this brand, 5lbs of plastic get removed from the ocean and then upcycled and reused.

How exactly do they manage that? Well through their partnership with the Plastic Bank. This also creates jobs for locals in the Philippines, so it’s not just helping the environment but also the society.

And it gets better. This brand isn’t just about watches – in fact, I feel like they’re more on an afterthought for them. They sell luggage, backpacks, solar banks (solar-powered speakers and power banks) and wristwatches. And they sell a bag that is entirely made from recycled ocean plastic, which is just another reason why they deserve to be on this list even though they’re not that big in the watch world.

But let me tell you one thing about their watches – even though they sport a minimal design, their unique hexagon shape makes it surprisingly easy to tell time. That’s their thing and I love it! If you’re looking for a unique watch, you might as well buy one that’s easier to read and that has a direct impact on the amount of plastic in the oceans.

Casiotron 1974 – The First Casio Digital Watch

Before the Apple Watch’s not so humble beginnings in 2015, the Casio watch brand introduced features that would become the harbinger for bringing technology to the wrist. Today. the iconic Japanese digital watch manufacturer has hundreds and hundreds of digital watches on the market.

The range is so massive, the company must use a string of letters and digits as model numbers rather than names. All of these digital watches and their features can be traced back to one watch, Casio’s very first digital watch, the Casiotron, now an icon itself and a collector’s item. But was it the first? Read on for a lesson in technology history.

Casio: A Household Name

It was their success in the manufacturing of calculators that would make the family-owned Casio business become a household name worldwide. They were one of the five major brands that won the “calculator wars” of the 1970s. Along with Texas Instruments, Sharp, Canon, and Hewitt-Packard, Casio reduced the calculator from a bulky and costly desktop machine to a compact battery-powered pocket calculator. This success fueled their desire to focus on electrical products and the growing computer market. They even developed and produced a wrist calculator.

By 1974, the company became the pioneer of mass-producing electronic quartz watches. These watches were the first successful electronic watches and combined technology with fashion for timepieces that became revolutionary for watch wearers. The innovative and trendy watches were called Casiotrons, and they sold like hotcakes around the world.

casiotron 1974

Casiotron’s 1974 Launch

Launched in October of 1974, the Casiotron had a tiny computerized Liquid Crystal Display screen that showed the hours, minutes, seconds, and date. And it also had a quite unique function at the time,  that could automatically determine the number of days in a month. This watch was considered ground-breaking when it was released.

Some unique design features on the original Casiotron (because there were so many) is that it had no “Liquid Crystal” lettering on the dial (later models did) And the caseback of the watch also had a triangular engraving that was meant to resemble the Casio headquarters at the time, the Sumitomo building in Shinjuku.

It was Casio’s expertise in developing the battery-operated handheld calculator that gave the brand an edge in the digital watch world. The crystal oscillators in digital watches create electronic pulses to keep steady time, a technology similar to the electronic calculator which Casio had expertly mastered.

Since the watch had the ability to count the days in a month, the result was the first digital watch that had a visible calendar function. Added to that was the fact that it had an LCD display that was always on. Unlike the LED, the wearer didn’t have to press a button to see the display. This combination made the Casiotron an enormous hit across the globe.

1990 Casiotron Re-release

In the 1990s, Casio decided to re-release the Casiotron in various forms due to its popularity. The following are the models (all in the TRN model range) that I am aware of that were released.

Below are the best pics I could find and rework from online. There are also a huge variety of other Casiotrons around, so feel free to let me know if you have one in the comments. Maybe I can feature your picture!

Casiotron Predecessors: LED vs LCD

As welcomed as the Casiotrons were, in all fairness, credit must be given where credit is due.

During the 1960s, Swiss, Japanese, and American watch crafters were in a race to develop a wristwatch with the application of quartz technology. It had already been used in large precision clocks. Now the quest was how to miniaturize this technology. Several companies took on lots of research, but it was Seiko who launched the first one, the Astron in December of 1969.

But on May 6, 1970, a watch like no other watch, the Hamilton Pulsar was introduced during a press conference in New York City. Powered by quartz movement, it had no moving parts and made no ticking sound. Only a few were released until the LED Pulsar P1 launched two years later in 1972. It was considered a luxury watch and was more expensive than a Rolex at that time.

It was the first mass-produced digital watch and appeared on the character James Bond’s wrist in the 1973 film Live and Let Die. American president Gerald Ford drew much criticism for wearing one when the nation was going through economic difficulties.

But while Roger Moore and Gerald Ford were sporting Pulsars, engineers were busily producing a low-powered LCD chip that would greatly extend the life of a watch battery. Before long, LCD display technology was born, and the Pulsar’s LED became “old school” tech. Microma, a subsidiary of the Intel Corporation, developed the LCD watch.

It was released two years before the Casiotron. But the watch was a failure, not because of poor design but for poor marketing. A $600,000 advertisement failed to capture the consumer market’s attention. CEO Andy Grove wore the watch to remind him to never again market directly to consumers.

Is the Casiotron Still Available?

Intel’s Microma market failure became Casiotron’s success story and reputation as the first LCD digital watch. Casio has long since stopped manufacturing the Casiotron, but vintage watch collectors still sell them.

It’s important to have confidence in the re-seller you buy from. Unfortunately, dishonest resellers use parts from a number of other watch models to craft a watch that only looks like the original. Others sell faulty ones that stop working in a matter of months. You’ll likely pay more, but to get an original Casiotron, it’s important to search for a reputable vintage watch reseller.

Casio G-Shock GA150 Review

Casio G-Shock GA150 Review

Casio G-Shock GA150-1A Review

With the G-Shock GA150 Casio has tried something a little different.

Sure it looks very much like many other of their massive range of G-Shocks, but the overall bezel and dial combination leads to an almost chiseled 3D look. The color is matte black, giving it a tough, almost tool-like finish.

With flat lines and areas all around the case that are designed to not only protect the watch but also provide a home for the four buttons.

Casio has provided the standard 200m water resistance and shock resistance as they do on all G-Shocks. But this watch also has magnetic protection built into the case. A nice bonus if you happen to work in an Aluminum smelting plant! (where strong magnets are used :>)

They have also used their patented Hollow Guard structure in the case to help protect against shock and impact.

The GA150 shown here is in many ways a black-out watch with a small negative display for the time and another for the date. Of course, it is not completely black with the analog hands being white to allow us to easily read the time. And, the seconds are displayed in a separate sub-dial at 3 o’clock.

There is a second version of this watch in all white, so it is kind of a homage to Michael Jackson’s – black and white song (bad joke, I know!).

ga-150 g-shock strap

Overall, the GA150 is quite a large watch at 55m diameter, so if you have small wrists, I would not recommend it.

Also, because the case and strap are resin, it is not going to be as comfortable as say a nice soft well-worn leather or nato strap. However, most people who own G-Shocks are happy wearing them day in day out.

G-Shock GA150 Specs & Features

Here are the specs of the GA150 according to Casio:
